People with visual and mobility impairments show a significant deterioration in their activity levels and independence. This combination of visual and mobility impairments occurs most often among the elderly. To provide protection from chronic diseases that threaten the well-being of the elderly and assist them to stay happy and social, the concept of robotic walker was proposed and several prototypes have been tested. This paper studies the needs of the visually impaired elderly people and suggested including obstacle avoidance and stair detection functionalities in robotic walker development based on: a) improving quality of life of the elderly and b) significant cost saving in health care..
